This limited edition bronze captures the power and energy of five horses breaking from the starting stalls. I have always loved this moment. All the anticipation, the hopes, the dreams, the training, the discipline have built to this moment. All the tension seems to hang in mid air, suspended. The crowd hush, almost quiet and then stalls burst open and all that energy is released. The horses all react differently and therefore the jockeys. This creates a wide variety of poses and movement, that in isolation can look somewhat ungainly, however when they are composed together create great drama and beauty. I wanted to capture the serene, athletic power of the horses and the skill and balance of the jockeys. Freezing this moment of the race, the start, where all possibilities are ahead creates something that I want to achieve with all my work, hopefully fuelling the imagination of the viewer to wonder, what might happen next..

The paintings of Sir Alfred Munnings are a source of great inspiration to me. He is unrivalled in his ability to capture the horse and in his feel for and keen observation of the sport, demonstrated with such great skill on canvas. This bronze is also, in part an homage to his great works.
